Assembly of First Nations Welcomes Appointment of Modern Treaty Commissioner Monday 06 May 2024 02:44 PM UTC+00 | Tags: press-release (May 6, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief, Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak and AFN Yukon Regional Chief Kluane Adamek welcome the historic announcement by the Government of Canada to create an independent Modern Treaty Commissioner. The new Commissioner’s role is to provide oversight to ensure the Government of Canada fulfills its obligations under Modern Treaties and strengthens accountability within nation-to-nation, Inuit-Crown, and government-to-government relationships. "This announcement represents a positive step forward in the relationship between Modern Treaty and Self-Government rights holders and the Government of Canada," said AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. "The recognition and fulfillment of Treaty obligations is an essential part of reconciliation. First Nations continue to advocate for the fulfillment of all Treaties between First Nations and Canada, through processes led by Treaty-holders themselves. This work has the potential to advance our journey towards enhanced accountability and mutual respect." "The creation of a Modern Treaty Commissioner marks a step forward in honouring the commitments Canada has made to First Nations and upholding the spirit and intent of these agreements" said AFN Regional Chief Kluane Adamek.
