(October 4, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa) – Today, on the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people, National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) expressed her support for all First Nations women, girls, and gender-diverse people affected by violence and called for the full implementation of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls' 231 Calls for Justice.

"Today, we remember those we’ve lost to violence, like Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, Mashkode Bizhiki'ikwe, Rebecca Contois, and Chantel Moore, and we stand with their families, friends, and communities," said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. "These losses show the ongoing crisis and our need for justice. Today, we come together at events and vigils across the country to push for the safety and dignity of all our sisters and to hold accountable the systems that fail to protect First Nations women, girls and gender-diverse people."

In June, the AFN released a five-year independent review on the progress of the Calls for Justice. The findings show that only two have been fully implemented, with the majority showing little to no progress, highlighting the critical need for enhanced support to fully implement the Calls for Justice.

"Our daughters, sisters and mothers deserve a future where all First Nations girls, women, and gender-diverse people feel safe and valued," said Chief Connie Big Eagle, Chair of the AFN Women's Council. "On Sisters in Spirit Day, we call on all levels of government to commit to immediate and sustained action. We must see the full implementation of the National Inquiry's Calls for Justice and end the cycle of violence to ensure no more stolen sisters!"

"Governments at all levels must fulfill their responsibilities by implementing the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls' 231 Calls for Justice. This is crucial to protect First Nations women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals,” concluded AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. “By acting on these Calls for Justice, we not only seek justice for those affected but will also make progress on ending this ongoing national tragedy.”

AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak and New Brunswick Regional Chief Joanna Bernard Condemn Racist Remarks by New Brunswick PC Candidate Sherry Wilson

(October 4, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) – Today, Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak and AFN New Brunswick Regional Chief Joanna Bernard have denounced the recent and past remarks made by New Brunswick Progressive-Conservative (PC) Candidate Sherry Wilson that support racist ideologies and disrespect the significance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

"Sherry Wilson's comparison of Policy 713 to residential schools is deeply hurtful," said AFN New Brunswick Regional Chief Joanna Bernard. "Policy 713, which allows students to change their pronouns or names without parental consent, aims to protect vulnerable children, including those who identify as 2SLGBTQQIA+, enabling them to be their authentic selves. In contrast, the Indian Residential School system exploited children and attempted to erase and strip our cultural identities. Ms. Wilson's statement on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is either intentionally offensive or incredibly ignorant. I urge her to withdraw from the race and educate themselves about our true shared history. We expect all political candidates to conduct themselves with respect and understanding. There is no place in this country for racism, and those who perpetuate it should step down."

"Sherry Wilson's comments are completely unacceptable," said AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. "Suggesting that our children were taken to residential schools due to lack of parental oversight is not only wrong but also extremely harmful. It perpetuates the false and racist view that First Nations cannot care for our children, a violation we have fought decades at the highest levels to rectify. Ms. Wilson's comments are part of a disturbing pattern in the New Brunswick PC Party, showing that some members either lack understanding or deny the history of residential schools. I join AFN Regional Chief Joanna Bernard in demanding her immediate withdrawal and a public apology to the families and Survivors of residential schools."

Islamic History Month 2024

Islamic History Month in Canada is an occasion to honour the contributions of Muslims across Canada and remind us of the diverse stories, cultural milestones, and enduring impact Muslim communities bring to collective Canadian identity.

This year, Islamic History Month is overshadowed by a troubling recent rise of Islamophobia in Canada. Since last October, the National Council of Canadian Muslims has reported an increase of Islamophobic incidents by 1300 percent. This rise in hatred and bigotry threatens the safety and wellbeing of everyone in this country.

This year, Palestinian, Lebanese and Sudanese Canadians across the country are also struggling with intensified war and conflict in their previous homelands, where many continue to hold close family and community connections. Many Muslims in Canada who originate from those regions have noted an increased strain on their sense of safety here, and find themselves unable to practice their faith publicly or simply exist without fear of being targeted or attacked.

In September 2024, the Government of Canada released its Action Plan on Combatting Hate, to address emerging and evolving manifestations of hate experienced by individuals and communities in Canada and to foster connection, safety, belonging, and trust. The CRRF provided key research, policy recommendations, innovative solutions, subject matter expertise and insight to the Action Plan. In addition, the federal government introduced the Canada Community Security Program (CCSP), which replaces and expands on the Security Infrastructure Program (SIP) and supports communities at risk of hate-motivated crime and funds the improvements to increase their safety. The Community Security Program is now open to applications from organizations needing to ensure community gathering spaces like community centres, daycares, places of worship & schools are safer.

Islamophobia is on the rise. Canadians must reject all forms of hate and stand united for a more inclusive Canada for our families and communities.

The office of Canada's Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia has released a poster series to celebrate generations of Canadian Muslims, women and girls to download and share, and will continue to share Islamic History Month celebrations and other work to combat Islamophobia in Canada in its newsletter.

We look forward to continuing to celebrate and support the rich and diverse contributions of Muslims in Canada, strengthen connections across communities and combat Islamophobia for a Canada where we can all feel welcome and safe.

Notice of CDIC's 2024 Annual Public Meeting: "Our unwavering focus to protect depositors"

The Board of Directors of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) is pleased to announce that its 2024 Annual Public Meeting will be held via live bilingual webcast on November 6, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET.

Leah Anderson, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Robert Sanderson, Chair of the Board, will be joined by members of senior management to discuss how CDIC protects depositors and promotes financial stability by focusing on depositor confidence, resolution readiness, and organizational strength in a dynamic operating environment. 

The Annual Public Meeting will address key issues and initiatives outlined in CDIC's 2024 Annual Report.

Members of the public are invited to participate virtually and ask questions in advance by e-mailing smenquiries@cdic.ca, or by sending a tweet or direct message to @CDIC_CA in English or @SADC_CA in French. A selection of questions will be covered during the meeting with the remainder posted to CDIC.ca.
