Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Concludes Successful Languages and Learning Forum Wednesday 06 March 2024 09:40 PM UTC+00 | Tags: press-release (March 6, 2024 – Treaty No.7, Calgary, Alberta) – The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) successfully concluded its largest Languages and Learning Forum, titled “Exploring First Nations Education and Linguistic Connections,” last Thursday. The event, which took place from February 26 to 29, 2024, on Treaty 7 territory, which brought together over 300 leaders in First Nations education, post-secondary education, and language. The forum provided an opportunity to learn and share about First Nations' jurisdiction over education and language revitalization, innovative practices in lifelong learning, and the development of agreements and models for language and education delivery. The progressive sessions also covered a wide range of topics, including regenerative Indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) for language and data sovereignty, the integration of cultural-based knowledge in the education system, and furthering First Nations-led education in the K-12 and post-secondary education levels. "It was inspiring to host many experts in First Nations education and languages. These engaging discussions will help establish future priorities. We lift you up for your important work in advancing our shared goal of enhancing First Nations education and support for language learners," said AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. "I extend my deepest thanks to all participants for their dedication to the future of First Nations languages and education. First Nations are exercising jurisdiction and control over our education and language revitalization.
